This review is part of an Education Development Trust commissioned series dealing with a number of issues surrounding school improvement. It recognises that teachers are vital assets in schools, that effective teaching leads to the improvement of schools, and discusses what makes an effective teacher.

The research suggests that an effective teachers are, for example, clear about instructional goals, make clear their expectations of students, accept responsibility for student attainment and are knowledgeable of curricula.
