Run by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS) assesses 9 to 10 year olds and 13 to 14 year olds on their skills in both maths and science. TIMSS takes place every three years and with over 50 countries participating. As it focuses on curriculum it tests pupils’ content knowledge rather than their ability to apply it.

The 2011 TIMSS covered achievement data by subject and content domain within each subject; achievement data by cognitive domain within each subject; comparative data showing each country's achievement against that of other countries, by subject, content and cognitive domains; trend data showing each country's achievement over time by subject, content and cognitive domains; contextual information about characteristics of the national education systems, schools, teachers and pupils and their homes; and relationships between contextual characteristics and achievement.

In listing research, EdCentral makes no judgment or recommendation as to its quality, validity or methodology and none should be inferred. Through peer ratings left by education practitioners, EdCentral’s aim is to support the development of a repository of shared knowledge and experience.
