Author(s):

This document from the DfE offers an overview of the powers school staff have for managing behaviour in their school. It covers what power teachers have to discipline pupils for misbehaviours that occur in school and, in some circumstances, outside of school.

It also offers a brief account of what the law allows schools and teachers to do when dealing with poor behaviour; detention, both during and after school hours; pupils’ conduct outside the school gates; and the confiscation of inappropriate items.

Finally, it assures schools that the power to discipline also applies to all paid staff with responsibility for pupils (unless the head teacher states otherwise), while reiterating that head teachers, proprietors and governing bodies must ensure there is a strong behaviour policy in place to support staff in managing behaviour.

In listing research, EdCentral makes no judgment or recommendation as to its quality, validity or methodology and none should be inferred. Through peer ratings left by education practitioners, EdCentral’s aim is to support the development of a repository of shared knowledge and experience.
