Offering guidance from the Department for Education, this handbook sets out the government’s vision and priorities for effective governance. It outlines the core role and functions of the governing board, summarises the legal duties of boards, and signposts more detailed information, guidance and resources.

This new edition of the handbook has been re-structured to provide a clearer account of key features of effective practice. The DfE recommends reading it alongside the new Competency Framework, which describes the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for effective governance.

In listing research, EdCentral makes no judgment or recommendation as to its quality, validity or methodology and none should be inferred. Through peer ratings left by education practitioners, EdCentral’s aim is to support the development of a repository of shared knowledge and experience.
