Arguing that the foundation of great teaching is laid on the expectations teachers have for themselves, Whitaker sets out 17 recommendations to help good teachers become great.

He proposes that great teachers establish clear expectations for themselves at the start of the year and follow them consistently as the year progresses; they manage their classrooms thoughtfully, and only say what they mean; and never forget that it is people, not programs that determine the quality of a school.

Following these and other recommendations he claims can improve the quality of teaching across a school and give pupils a better experience of education.
