The book guides new teachers through the various routes into teaching. It runs through teaching placements and then onto getting a first job and the induction process.

Its first section addresses with the practicalities of embarking on a teacher-training course. The second looks at how to deal with teaching placements, with the third and final section helps newly qualified teachers prepare for their induction year, discussing what to expect and how it will differ from placements.

Bennett offers practical advice on the role of tutors and mentors, lesson planning, marking, assessment, and behaviour management strategies. He also provides a list of useful websites for trainee teachers.
